Although acne can be very mild for some, it is a condition that can cause significant psychological distress for many people. We treat all types of acne in our clinic, and we do our utmost to leave you feeling confident in treating your skin and managing your new skincare routine.
Acne can cause blocked pores and oily skin. Sometimes the skin can become inflamed making you feel sore to the touch and uncomfortable.
Acne can consist of a combination of the following:
- Blackheads: pores that are blocked by excess oil and dead skin cells, yet still open to the air.
- Whiteheads: pores that are blocked by oil, skin and bacteria that are closed and trapped below the skin surface.
- Papules: small red bumps under the skin formed from inflamed pores clogged with bacteria, without a pus-filled head.
- Pustules: these are same as papules and most commonly known as "spots". They have a white tip filled and can become hard and inflamed in acne.
- Nodules: these are hard red painful bumps forming deep under the skin. Caused by excess oil production and dead skin cells, can leave dark blemishes on the skin. Generally treated by doctors with advanced training in dermatology, and usually with oral prescription-only medication.
- Cysts: these are pus-filled soft bumps in the deep layers of the skin. Caused by the build-up dead skin cells, excess oil production and bacteria. They can burst and leave scarring. These are best treated by a skin specialist who will use oral medications where suited.
Acne can be caused by hormonal changes making it an extremely ailment common during puberty and usually disappears by late teenage years.
Acne can also reappear in adulthood, especially for females throughout their menstrual cycles, and during further hormonal fluctuations in peri-menopause, and menopause.
Acne Rosacea (link to Rosacea section here) can also become prevalent at this time and usually appears in men and women over the age of 30.
For patients with severe, persistent, or scarring acne, or where acne is causing significant psychological distress, isotretinoin (Roaccutane®) may be an appropriate treatment option. Isotretinoin is a highly effective oral medication that works by reducing excess oil production, preventing pore blockage, and reducing inflammation associated with acne.
Dr Sylvia prescribes and monitors isotretinoin for suitable patients within primary care, in line with established clinical guidelines and safety requirements. Treatment is carefully supervised and includes in-person consultations, appropriate blood tests, and regular review throughout the course. Isotretinoin is not suitable for everyone, and detailed counselling is provided before treatment is started, including discussion of potential side effects and, where relevant, strict pregnancy-prevention requirements.
Care is individualised, with close follow-up and practical guidance provided throughout treatment to support skin health, treatment tolerability, and long-term outcomes.
At Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP, along with diagnosing and treating acne and skin concerns, we aim to provide you with the knowledge and guidance on skincare routines and lifestyle factors that will empower you on your skin wellness journey.
