Eczema or Dermatitis
Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP works with major Irish health insurers, including VHI, Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health.
Eczema or dermatitis is a common non-contagious skin condition that causes dry, itchy, cracked, red skin. Eczema appears when the natural skin barrier has been compromised, and the skin layers become red, irritated and itchy.
Eczema is a common skin condition with no single known cause. It may be linked to genetics, dietary intolerances, or sensitivities to environmental irritants such as washing products, pollen, soaps, pet hair, or dust mites. Changes in temperature can also affect the skin barrier, causing dryness, itchiness, and irritation, making the skin more vulnerable to bacterial or viral infections.
Eczema often appears alongside other allergic conditions, such as hayfever, or individuals with a history of childhood asthma. Regular moisturising and use of appropriate, hypoallergenic skincare products at home can help to reduce symptoms and support the skin barrier.
At Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP we provide assessment and management of mild to moderate eczema, including confirmation of diagnosis and the use of appropriate topical treatments. Oral treatments are not provided. Specialist services such as biologic therapies, phototherapy (light therapy), and patch testing are hospital- or specialist-based treatments provided by consultant dermatologists and are not offered at Dr. Sylvia, - The Skin GP.
Where eczema is severe, complex, or requires specialist investigation or treatment, patients are referred to an appropriate consultant specialist in line with national guidelines. Dr Sylvia continues to support patients before and after specialist referral, where appropriate, as part of ongoing care at Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP.
