Actinic keratoses are common, rough or scaly patches of sun-damaged skin that develop over time on areas frequently exposed to UV light. They are most often found on the face, scalp (especially where hair is thinning), ears, hands, and forearms. Many are harmless, but some can become sore, thicken, or persist despite moisturising, so assessment is advised.

At Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP, we provide assessment of sun damage and actinic keratoses. Review focuses on confirming the diagnosis, checking for signs of early skin cancer, and advising on sun protection and ongoing monitoring.

Where treatment is needed, we can prescribe or administer appropriate therapies depending on the area and severity, and can arrange a biopsy if there is any concern about a lesion changing or needing confirmation. Early review is important if a patch becomes tender, thickened, ulcerated, rapidly growing, or starts to bleed.
