An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. It most commonly affects the big toe and can be triggered by nail shape, tight footwear, nail-cutting technique, injury, or repeated pressure on the toe.
At Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP, we provide assessment and treatment of ingrown toenails within the community setting.
Where conservative measures are insufficient, treatment may involve partial removal of the affected section of the nail under local anaesthetic. This is combined with phenolisation of the nail matrix (nail base) to reduce the risk of the ingrown portion recurring.
The procedure is performed safely in-clinic and is suitable for many straightforward cases. Some health insurers may reimburse part of the cost of ingrown toenail surgery, depending on individual policy cover.
