Cysts are common, non-cancerous lumps that develop just beneath the skin. They vary in size and type and most often occur on the scalp, face, neck, and trunk. While many cysts are harmless and can be left alone, others may become uncomfortable, infected, or catch on clothing or hair, prompting assessment or treatment.

Dr. Sylvia assesses and manages common skin cysts, including epidermoid and pilar cysts (often referred to as “sebaceous cysts”). Assessment focuses on confirming the diagnosis, excluding more concerning causes, and advising on appropriate management.

Where treatment is required, cysts may be managed with surgical removal under local anaesthetic in the community setting. Complete excision of the cyst and its lining is recommended where appropriate, as this reduces the risk of recurrence.

If a cyst becomes infected, treatment may involve antibiotics and, in some cases, incision and drainage rather than immediate removal.

Cysts that are complex, recurrent, unusually located, or require specialist care are referred to an appropriate consultant specialist.

Dr. Sylvia continues to support patients before and after referral, where appropriate, as part of ongoing care in primary care.
