Biopsies and excisions are procedures used to diagnose and treat a wide range of skin lesions by removing a sample of skin or the lesion in its entirety for examination and management.
At Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP, we provide assessment and procedural management of suitable skin lesions within the community setting, with a focus on accurate diagnosis, safe technique, and appropriate aftercare.
Procedures offered include punch biopsy with suturing, shave excision with electrocautery, curettage and cautery, and elliptical surgical excision with suturing for selected lesions.
The choice of procedure is guided by the type, size, and location of the lesion, as well as clinical indications and patient factors.
All patients wishing to undergo skin surgery at Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP are required to attend an initial consultation prior to any procedure.
This appointment allows Dr Sylvia to carry out a detailed assessment of the lesion, including examination, diagnosis, and discussion of appropriate management options. This initial consultation is required for all skin surgical procedures to ensure safe, informed, and appropriate care.
A treatment plan is then agreed based on clinical findings, patient factors, and suitability for community-based skin surgery.
Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP works with major Irish health insurers, including VHI, Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health, and part of the procedural cost may be covered depending on individual policy terms.
Lesions that are large, complex, recurrent, or unsuitable for community-based management are referred to an appropriate hospital or consultant specialist service in line with clinical guidelines, with ongoing support provided before and after your referral as part of your care in a convenient and comfortable primary care setting.
