Skin tags (also known as fibroepithelial polyps) are common, small, soft growths that form where the skin folds or rubs together, such as the neck, underarms, groin, or eyelids.

They are benign (non-cancerous) and usually pose no health risk, though they may become irritated by clothing or jewellery and can be of cosmetic concern for some individuals.

Skin tags can occur at any age but are more frequent in adults and may be associated with friction, weight changes, or hormonal influences.

Do skin tags need to be removed?

Skin tags are harmless and do not have to be removed unless they cause discomfort, irritation, or cosmetic concern. If you notice changes in a growth, or if its appearance is unusual or it bleeds, seek medical assessment.

At Dr. Sylvia - The Skin GP, we offer assessment and management of skin tags as part of minor skin surgery services. During your consultation, skin tags are examined to confirm their benign nature and to distinguish them from other skin lesions that may require different care.

Where removal is appropriate — for example, if a skin tag is symptomatic, frequently irritated, or causes cosmetic concern — Dr Sylvia can perform safe in-clinic procedures such as shaving or removal using curettage and cautery with a hyfrecator (a gentle low-voltage electrosurgical tool).

These treatments are carried out under local anaesthetic when needed and are suitable for many straightforward skin tags.
