Moles (also called melanocytic naevi) are very common, usually harmless growths made up of pigment-producing skin cells. They can be flat or raised, light brown to dark brown, and may appear anywhere on the body. Most moles are completely normal and do not need any treatment, but they can sometimes become a nuisance by catching on clothing, jewellery, or hair, or becoming irritated through friction, shaving, or repeated minor trauma.

At Dr. Sylvia The Skin GP, we provide assessment of nuisance moles. The aim of review is to confirm that the mole looks benign, assess any symptoms such as soreness or repeated irritation, and advise on whether it is best left alone or whether removal is appropriate. If a mole has changed in size, shape or colour, looks unusual compared to your other moles, or there is any concern about melanoma, we can arrange urgent onward referral to a Consultant Dermatologist, as melanoma is not managed in the GP community setting.

Where a mole is clearly benign but troublesome, we can discuss practical management options, including minor surgical removal under local anaesthetic when appropriate. This is most suitable for moles that are repeatedly catching, uncomfortable, bleeding after friction, or causing cosmetic concern. You will be guided through the benefits, scarring risks, and expected healing, with a clear plan tailored to your skin and the location of the lesion. Consideration is given to referring onward to a plastic surgeon for lesions on the face.
